Carbon Emission/Sequestration and Boreal Forest

Containing approximately one third of all remaining global forests, boreal forests harbour a substantial portion of global carbon stocks or roughly 25% of the stored terrestrial carbon estimated at 559 giga tonnes in combined soil and above-ground biomass. In comparison with other forests the major part (85%) is sequestered in the forest soil.

Carbon budgetDisturbance of these forests has major consequences to the vegetation and the soil, and their respective carbon pools. Disturbance of these ecosystems is accompanied by Green House Gas emissions, mainly emissions of CO2 through burning and decomposition of biomass in vegetation and soils. These emissions can cause major feedbacks on the climate system.
